TIE: Cardinal Gibbons 1, St. John Paul II 1

Most teams had Presidents’ Day off, but Cardinal Gibbons played to a time-limit tie against St. John Paul II in the season opener at Brian Arnold Field on Monday. Chiefs Catcher Eddie Marshall led the way offensively with three hits, including his first home run of the season. Vynn Buerrosse, Reef Carney, Travis Hogan, Dylan Iannucci and Jason Vasquez also hit safely in the opener. On the mound, Michael Kass (UCF) went 4.1 innings, striking out 10 of the 18 batters he faced and giving up just one earned run. Brenden Trujillo allowed just two hits and struck out seven in 3.2 innings of relief, and Mike Ragusa pitched the ninth.

St. John Paul II’s three-hit day also came from its catcher, Beau Rurey. Tommy Ciaccio tripled and Lincoln Dorland and Thomas Velardi provided the Eagles’ other two hits. Junior Connor Cavo struck out five and allowed one earned run over 4.0 innings for a solid Opening Day start. Sophomore right-hander Jack Wilhoit threw three scoreless innings in relief, and FSU commit Emmanuel Lantigua got the final two frames.

Calvary Christian Academy (2-0) def. Killian, 1-0

According to Calvary’s GameChanger and MaxPreps, there was only one hit in this game. The weird part, it wasn’t from the Eagles. Killian’s GameChanger suggests that Calvary outhit them 2 to 1, but MaxPreps is what matters to the FHSAA
